Maria Skhosana’s Story
Maria Skhosana was born on a farm in Tonteldoos, Mpumalanga. Growing up, there were no schools on the farm. As a child of farm workers, Maria began working alongside her parents at the age of 16. Later, she moved to Gauteng where she worked as a domestic worker in Boksburg ad Benoni.
Through her church, Maria joined a group of women who were taught how to sew clothes by a white woman. All the training was offered free of charge. Maria quickly mastered the skill and began making clothes for her children and people close to her.
Despite her talent, Maria’s skills were never fully recognised or supported. Due to a lack of resources, guidance, and business support, she was unable to grown her sewing into a registered business or generate additional income for her family. With the right assistance, Maria could have built a successful enterprise.
Maria Passed away at the age of 52. Throughout her working life, she earned very little, even though she possessed valuable skills that could have changed her economic circumstance if they had been unlocked and supported.

Esther Masilela’s Story
In her 30s, Esther got married. Her husband saw something many others had overlooked – her ambition, her courage and her desire for more. He believed in her enough to stand beside her, supporting her to obtain a heavy-vehicle driver’s licence.
That belief changed everything.
Today, Esther is a professional bus driver working for a major transport company. She no longer serves within homes – she now drives hundreds of people toward their destinations, confidently earning a living in a male-dominated industry.
Esther’s story reminds us that talent exists everywhere, but opportunity does not. With support, guidance, and belief, domestic workers can unlock their skills and rewrite their futures. Without it, many remain unseen – not because they lack ability, but because non one ever opened the door.

Jeanette Mahlangu’s Story
Without formal training, Jeanette taught herself the art of making clothes. After long, exhausting days at work, she would sit behind the sewing machine, turning fabric into beautiful creations. She made dresses, men’s and women’s suits, and even wedding gowns. Her hands did not rest there – she also offered wedding décor services, using her creativity to bring joy to others’ special moments.
In October 2025, Jeanette made a brave decision. Realising that her talent deserves her full commitment, she resigned from domestic work to pursue her passion for sewing full-time.
Today, Jeanette earns a living from her craft, despite having no formal certificate in tailoring and operating a business that is still unestablished. Along the way, she was forced to give up wedding décor services, and the income that came with it due to a lack of transport.
Jeanette story is one courage, resilience, and untapped greatness. With the right support, training, and resources, her talent has the potential to reach far beyond her community – even onto the word stage. Without support, that potential risks remaining unseen, not because it is absent, but because opportunity is.
